Before he became a global radio legend, Rick Dees was cutting his teeth right here in North Carolina — starting on the air as a teenager at a Greensboro station while still in high school.
A proud UNC Chapel Hill graduate, Dees worked his way through some of the Southeast’s most legendary stations, including Chapel Hill’s campus radio, WKIX in Raleigh, and stops across the region — building the quick wit and energy that would define his career.
That journey led him to Memphis, where everything changed. While on the air at WMPS and WHBQ, Dees created the smash hit “Disco Duck,” launching him onto the national stage and setting the tone for a career unlike any other.
From there, he went on to dominate Los Angeles radio, turning KIIS-FM into the #1 billing station in America, earning 10 straight Billboard Radio Personality of the Year awards, a Marconi Award, and induction into both the National Radio Hall of Fame and the NAB Hall of Fame.
Today, Rick Dees is heard worldwide as the host of the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, reaching millions of listeners across the globe — but his story started right here in Carolina.
